Raffaldini Vineyards Releases First Wine From Swan Creek AVA
August 29, 2008
Ronda, NC, August 29, 2008—Raffaldini Vineyards, an Italian-style vineyard in the Swan Creek Region of North Carolina, will release MCCCXLVIII this weekend, the first release from the newly-recognized Swan Creek AVA.
The wine’s name, 1348, refers to the year that the Raffaldini family traces it roots and is an authentic representation of wines made by the Raffaldini family in their home, Mantua, in the North-Central part of Italy. It is a rustic blend of Malvasia Nera, Sangiovese and Syrah, offering firm tannins and dark fruit with hints of spice. The wine is available at the tasting room, Villa Raffaldini, for $14.
“We are excited to offer customers a taste of wines from the Italian countryside,” winemaker Stephen Rigby, said. “The best Italian wines are simple, balanced and easy to drink with food, which is what we sought to achieve with this wine; something that expresses the terroir(tipicita) of Italy, the kind of wine that Italians drink everyday.”
The Swan Creek AVA encompasses 160-180 sq. miles in Wilkes, Yadkin and Iredell counties. Its proximity to the BrushyMountains gives Swan Creek a distinct, loamy soil consisting of schist, mica and other minerals as well as a microclimate that make Swan Creek wines unique. There are currently five vineyards located within the Swan Creek AVA: Raffaldini Vineyards in Ronda, N.C. and Laurel Gray Vineyards, Buck Shoals Vineyards, Shadow Springs Vineyard and Dobbins Creek Vineyards in Hamptonville, N.C. Several varietals of vinifera grapes are grown within the Swan Creek AVA, including many traditional and unique French and Italian varietals not widely available in the U.S.
Nestled in the Yadkin Valley Region of North Carolina, family-owned Raffaldini Vineyards brings Old World charm to the OldNorthState. Known as “Chianti in the Carolinas” Raffaldini currently produces five single varietal wines and four blends:Vermentino, Pinot Grigio, Sangiovese, Sangiovese Riserva and Montepulciano.
